‘Cat on a hot tin roof?’

Dateline: Southampton March 2012

As the country embraces the run-up to the Olympics, Idealogy seems to have been selected as the training ground for a new Olympic sport – Tin Tossing. Over the last few weekends we have been noticing an increasing amount of ‘detritus’ on the flat roof at the back of our Portland Street office.

And the speculation was becoming intense – man-sized Herring Gulls on nest building forays, testosterone fuelled tabbies looking for new challenges with no opposable thumbs, red-eyed rodents on a relocation exercise, even ‘Borrower-style’ miniature decorators biting off more than they could chew.

A little investigation consigned all of these curious notions to the local landfill. Instead, we found a few exterior clues, like lettuce spread around the car park area, and skip lids that looked as if they had been used as trampolines.

We had our answer. Local youths or the ‘forgotten inebriated’ had been clearing out accommodation by throwing the rubbish onto both the road and nearby roofs to create more welcoming sleeping accommodation.

Not much we can do about that – until something goes though a window! But that might be a bit of a stretch for non-Olympians.
