Fit for Purpose

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed how everyone on TV – well certainly the BBC – has become either a) much, much thinner b) found out where they left there cheekbones or c) acquired a robust twin pack of pushy-uppy bra’s in an attempt to achieve a 1960’s figure?

I’m assuming that it’s a combination of some Acai berry, electric-shock based, insect oil consuming celebrity diet, excessive gym sessions or PT tuition, possibly even physical or structural support. But whatever it is, EastEnders is now populated by men looking as if the make-up shadow has been masterfully, but overly applied.

Even the BBC Breakfast sofa is transforming into a Hollywood style casting coach. This very morning, Susannah Reid was struggling to contain her ‘lady bumps’ and Carol Kirkwood, the blond, Scottish (not a pre-condition) Weather Girl spent a lot of time side-on to the camera showing off a recently improved ‘good-side’ profile, emphasising a shrinking waistline and a Marilyn Monroe shaped warm front.

Which is all very lovely, but I couldn’t help wondering if this kind of screen presence is a reaction from the Corporation to shape up as it comes under increasing pressure from Pay Per View services and the tidal wave of News Channels and their ‘eye-candy’ anchor people.

I know that the BBC is trying to become a ‘fit for purpose’ service provider– I just hadn’t anticipated them being this fit, and for what purpose.

Got to go – the Weather Forecast is on…
