Boy oh boy!

My in box was full of ‘Royal Baby’ related emails this morning. Great offers of Mum and Baby skincare products, champagne to celebrate the Royal birth and mail after mail discussing how the birth of the newest Royal will boost our economy.

Now don’t get me wrong I am as interested as the person in the ‘news’ and frankly anything that rallies the British public to celebrate is fine with me, but jumping on the commercial bandwagon in the hope of flogging more products seems a little crass to me. But it did get me thinking. What would you buy such a high profile baby?

The answer – a design classic. Something that has stood the test of time, generation on generation or something new and innovative that will be a design classic of the future.

Here are just a few of my thoughts if you need a little inspiration ;-)

1. Rosendahl Monkey

The wooden monkey was designed by Kay Bojensen in 1951. The small monkey is just one of many wooden animals from Rosendahl Copenhagen. It is created in close collaboration with the Bojesen family and 100% in accord with Kay Bojesen’s original drawings. Have a look.

2. Flensted Mobile

On the island of Funen in Denmark, Flensted Mobiles, a family business, designs and makes mobiles. Mr. Bowlerman is a genuine European old-timer, reminiscent of the good old days and that hat is a design classic itself! Have a look.

3. Panton Junior Chair

This is the junior version of Verner Panton’s quirky and expressive Panton Chair. The original chair was designed by Panton in 1960 and with the assistance of Vitra a version of the chair was developed ready for series production in 1967. It was the first single material, single piece chair to be produced and it has become an iconic design classic. Have a look.

4. The Alphabet Bike

Is this a classic of the future? The Alphabet Bike, designed by the Wishbone Design Studio, is more than just great design. It is also the flagship for Wishbone’s Read With Me project in New Zealand. Have a look.

5. Winnie the Pooh Books

• When We were very young

• Winnie the Pooh

• Now We are Six

• The House at Pooh Corner

Written by A.A MILNE and illustrated by E. H. Shepard these 1924-1928 First Editions of the classic children's literature are timeless stories for kids. Have a look.

6. The Moneyphant

In 1987, Jørgen Møller and his grandchild designed the elephant bottle opener, which went on to be a design classic. In 2010, Møller teamed up with his great-grandchild to design this mirror polished stainless steel Moneyphant. The design bears all the hallmarks of classic Scandinavian design, strong, elegant and functional. Have a look.
