Productivity App of the Month - July: CardMunch

Business cards are in a state of flux. Outdated though a pocket full of cards may be, no current tech has overtaken the business card in terms of simplicity and accessibility. This is where LinkedIn’s CardMunch App has started to show signs of progress.

The most obvious positive to draw on is the connection between business cards and LinkedIn itself. Through the App hard-copy contacts can be transposed onto the world’s premier professional network, without taking up a lot of the user’s time.

Once you scan the business card, more “mainstream” readers will use algorithms and figure-recognition systems to decipher the card’s content. Given irregular fonts or spacing though, this can lead to inaccuracies or even a rejection of the card. With CardMunch, the human touch rules supreme. Each entry is hand-entered by the CM team, meaning even creative business cards out there can quickly and easily processed.

With a bulging contacts list on your phone, CardMunch can help you categorise your life by sorting contacts into different address books. It can also sync with your existing systems and provide an online backup of your contacts to ensure ease of use, while safeguarding against any hardware faults.

Once again this month’s App isn’t groundbreaking. What it has done, though, is help create a gold standard in business card recognition software, to help bridge the gap between traditional cards and whatever may come next…
