The iPad mini: Is it worth it?

Now the hype has subsided, we ask the important question: Is the iPad Mini necessary?

Those Apple folks are good at what they do. They’ve taken over the world through a simple tactic; creating something “different and luxurious”, which perhaps more accurately means “turning business tools into a commodity”. They’ve created products that consumers didn’t know they needed. With the iPad Mini, though, they may have forgotten to include the business…

In a world where we work on iMacs, travel with iPads and make conference calls from our iPhones, synchronicity of our products has become incredibly important in the eyes of many. But is there any room for the middle child – the iPad Mini?

Perhaps not – it’s a little small for doing on-the-go work, but too big to hold the same convenience as the phone. From commoditizing business, Apple’s latest venture has spawned commodity, plain and simple. It’s aimed at those for whom the iPad is a gadget rather than a tool. Who remembers when Blackberry phones symbolised the heavily corporate metropolis? Not many iPad Mini users, we’d wager. Since the iPhone’s advent, business and consumption have converged to a point where the former has been rendered obsolete. Which is exactly what the iPad Mini thrives on.

Let’s face it; businessmen don’t really need the extra link between iPhone and iPad. Nor do they need the reduced price that comes with it (assuming they’re lucky and have work-sponsored iPads, that is).

The iPad Mini is predominantly a gift – aimed at those who may not already have the complete set. The consumer tech writers have dubbed the Mini as (possibly) the best tablet on the market, despite Apple pricing the product higher than its Kindle, Galaxy or Nexus counterparts. For the everyday consumer, we’ve got to admit the iPad Mini is perfect.

In corporate terms, though, it’s pointless. By forgetting to include the business needs that have helped inform their past successes, Apple have released a new and unnecessary link into their product chain. As much as we believe in Apple, they’ve released a glorified toy, and very little more. Still, we love it… Suckers that we are!
