Seeing others as they see themselves

During a recent Workshop with the Kenwood NPD Team, held during February at The Langstone on Hayling Island, Idealogy set the team a simple but often controversial task.

“Draw a picture of somebody (anybody) and focus on the single most distinguishing feature of that person”. It’s a tried and trusted technique for defining group characteristics and dynamics and, as most amateur psychologists will tell you, a picture is worth a thousand words and provides as good a reflection of personality as your handwriting ever can – assuming, of course, that we actually understand handwriting!

So, is the picture below how the Kenwood NPD team see themselves, or is it a collection of key characteristics and personas contained in the group such as (deep breath…) controlling, happy, animated, protective, talented, and even pregnant?

It’s an interesting debate and there’s nothing definitive about our interpretation – for the record, we are not inferring that this rather disparate image is the collective energy contained within an obviously talented gathering, but it is a result of their outputs NOT ours!

And, as scary as it might be to Jane, James, Andrew, Beth, Rebecca, Iain, Sam, Nicola, John, Zoe and Lee, the picture shows a powerful combination of skills, personalities and team structure. And, quite often, very distinct personality types make for the best teams. Which is something we discovered only too well at the Workshop.

The teams ‘actual’ sketches are shown below.
