Productivity App of the Month - September: IFTTT (If This Then That)

Put simply, this month’s app builds relationships. Not between people, but between other Apps. IFTTT uses a simple statement – “if this then that” - to link the various functions your smartphone can offer you.

For example, you may want to automatically save new Instagram snaps directly to Dropbox. In the App’s jargon, you’re creating a ‘personal recipe’ by mixing a trigger (if) and an action (then). Put into practice, it reads:

If any new photos are uploaded to Instagram then add the file to Dropbox.

In the space of one sentence, you’ve saved yourself the task of constantly transferring files and syncing Apps together. Of course, IFTTT isn’t limited to this example – you can also set it to alert you when a particular email subject arrives in your inbox, or ask it to Tweet a blog when it is published.

If this still sounds like too much effort, though, you can always log on the App’s shared recipes pages, where ready-made relationships are yours for the picking.

The raison d’être for every productivity App is our need to save time without compromising on quality. On this basis IFTTT is the ideal productivity App – it takes away some mundane and repetitive tasks to free up your time (and your hands)…
