A quick reaction to QR Codes

Some of you may have noticed a new breed of barcode (albeit square)-type-things appearing in various places, on various products and in various scenarios in our day-to-day lives of late.

Quick Response, or QR codes are the latest 2 Dimensional way to access additional information about, well, whatever the QR code creator wants you to access really! A QR can be scanned by a smartphone to automatically receive text, imagery, video, sound and URLs - a mobile-friendly way to point people who are offline to an online resource.

The Japanese love them. Well I never! And they are becoming increasingly popular over here and in the U.S. But are they just another gimmick? - well no, not if you think about how they can be used:

On your company business cards and marketing materials, a QR code can point to a mobile friendly landing page that promotes a new campaign or content.

A Freebie. Everybody loves a freebie! A QR that gives 10% off a next purchase when scanned for example. A QR code can be unique to a single item or a multitude.

A Competition. Everybody loves a competition too! Hide QR codes on your website or on 1 piece of product packaging per 1000 let's say….you get the idea…

So although not exactly a new technology, certainly the way it is now being used is going to be interesting; at the moment in the UK, QR codes - and the apps that use them - are still alien to most people, but some big companies are running with the trend so that tells you something at least.

Keep looking out for them, but in the meantime here’s one that will take you to where you need to go – quickly!

And don’t forget, you’ll need an App to scan and read the QR on this blog. SO whether you’ve got a Symbian, Windows, Android, or iPhone here’s where to go to download one.

Idealogy’s recommendations are 'MCEPTION' from the iTunes store, 'QuickMark' for the Android Market, 'KaywaReader' for various devices and 'ScanLife' which is available from the Blackberry Appworld.
